Wow! Finally made it. I would have to say not having any Clinical Studies work to be the most beneficial part of my week. It is a nice feeling knowing that the semester is coming to an end.
Also, the most beneficial part of my week was having an Act 80 day last Monday. I got to meet the other business teachers from the middle and high schools, which was nice to collaborate and discuss what everyone is teaching. A department Wiki page was created so everyone can keep in touch, which I am finding beneficial.
If there was an aspect I would have changed in the past week, it would be being more tough with my 6th period computer class. I gave them an inch, and they took a foot. With the weather becoming warm, the students getting tired of Microsoft Access, and the year coming to an end, discipline has had to become a factor during the period. By Friday, the class is under control and everything is fine.
Glad we all made it to the end! Congrats everyone!

I would also have to agree that having no homework for C.S. was a huge part of having a successful. Between the lack of rest, heavy workload, being pulled in several different directions, and spending more time on the road than usual, any C.S. homework this week could have meant my demise haha.
ReplyDeleteI also completely agree with the discipline issue. I tend to be pretty loose with my students, but have recently had to be more firm. My students so often think that a decision I make on seating, separating students, what is and what is not allowed in the class room, and related management issues, are "debatable." I have had to be more firm this week than I have in the past because of that. I recall one specific time that a girl who likes to whine about the slightest bit of strictness started complaining about something I said and I simply said "HEY!" in a deep, serious (somewhat faking) voice, "This is NOT up for discussion!" I think my reaction took her by surprise and there were no more issues for the rest of that class lol.
Sounds like you're doing great though! I look forward to seeing all the big things you'll do with your career, and all the students you will touch with your unique ability to relate to people while also being a high quality teacher. Good luck Jonny! Stay in touch :).
(I just noticed my comment was longer than your blog; Ughhh! Lol).
ReplyDeleteIt is incredible how quickly students will take advantage of a good situation or as you said, given an inch, they'll take a foot. I try to remind them when I give them an inch that I can quickly take it back and that they were rewarded with an inch. I guess it's human nature to test the boundaries. I'm glad to hear that you were quickly able to get them back on track!
ReplyDeleteI am so happy for you... I know you will be a great teacher. You have such a good sense of humor and always come across as having such a zest for life that I'm sure the students will like your classes. Keep in touch...
I agree with you-no Clinical Studies work has been a nice break! Discipline in my classes has increased as well. I've had quite a few students be defiant lately. Remember to be consistent with the students which will help them to know what to expect from you. It sounds like you have fit in well at the school; good luck with the rest of the school year! We did it!! :)
